Your soul is worth it!

“What would it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36)

Busy doesn’t adequately describe how many in this assembly live each and every day. Mornings are early and evenings are late. Many of you with children spend time in Football, Band, Soccer, Basketball, and Homework. With the seemingly endless list of activities rest sometimes is few and far between. School is important, our careers are important, fun (extra-curricular) activities like football and the like are all important. Your soul, however, is of the utmost importance.

Last week, the article I wrote looked at the concept of giving God our all, and our best. The article looked at “loving the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind” (Luke 10:27), we compared this to the widow who gave “all she had” (12:44) in discussing that loving God acceptably involves us giving to God fairly of all we have. In our time, in our talents, and yes to be fair of our earnings also. I read an article recently that approximately 1.72 hours per day on social media platforms. Many of us spend far more time daily on social media. The average college student also spends about 94 minutes per day texting (about an hour and a half). Most of us also work 8-10 hours a day, and spend time eating as well. When you add in sleep it is easy to see that our 24 hour day goes by quickly.

While conveniences are nice, while many of the activities we can participate in are nice, our giving God fairly of all we have (including our time) requires sacrifice on our part. God still speaks to us through His word (Romans 10:17) and we are still expected to study it (daily) to show ourselves approved to God (2 Tim 2:15). God still expects us to assemble with the saints each and every time we are physically able (Heb. 10:25), and God still expects we will do good to others at every opportunity (Gal 6:10).

Heaven is important, as a matter of fact the decisions we make to prepare ourselves for heaven are far more important than any social media post, sporting event, sporting event practice, school, and career or text message. Don’t let the devil use the tactic of time, convenience, modern technology or recreation to pull us away from time spent in things with eternal significance. I love this congregation, I love and appreciate so many of you who spend your time diligently working the works of God. Let’s make sure that we “make the most of our time” (Eph 5:16)!
