Who Is My Friend?

A friend loves at all times, (Prov 17:17a)

A friend of mine,  Scott McCowan, who is the minister for the Parrish church of Christ, had a recent posting on his weblog about friends, in it there were some quotes that I just wanted to share with you.

Friendship quotes:

  1. A simple friend will stand by you when you are right, but a real friend will stand by you even when are you wrong (and they disagree).
  2. A simple friend identifies himself when he calls; A real friend doesn’t have too.
  3. A simple friend opens a conversation with a full news bulletin on his life; A real friend says, “what’s new with you?”
  4. A simple friend thinks the problems you whine about are recent;  A real friend says, “you have been whining about that for 14 years. Get up and do something about it.”
  5. A simple friend has never seen you cry; A real friend has shoulder soggy from your tears.
  6. A simple friend doesn’t know your parents’ first names; A real friend has them on speed dial.
  7. A simple friend brings a casserole to your party; A real friend comes early to help you cook and stays late to help you clean.
  8. A simple friend hates it when you call after he has gone to bed; A real friend asks you why you took so long to call.
  9. A simple friend seeks to talk with you about your problems; A real friend seeks to help you with your problems.
  10. A simple friend wonders about your past dating relationships; A real friend could blackmail you with it.
  11. A simple friend, when visiting, acts like a guest; A real friend opens your refrigerator and helps himself.
  12. A simple friend thinks the friendship is over when you have an argument; A real friend knows that it is not a friendship until after you have had a fight.
  13. A simple friend expects you to always be there for them.  A real friend expects to always be there for you.

Solomon records that a “Friend loves at all time” (Prov 17:17), and I cannot help to think about the words that Jesus says in John 15 “Greater love had no one than this, than to lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Truly God has shown his love for us in providing His Son Jesus as a sacrifice so we have a path to heaven, but Jesus reminds us that “you are My friends if you do whatever I command you” (John 15:14). I distinctly remember the commandment of Jesus to “Go into all the world and preach the gospel” (Mark 16:15), I can’t think of anything more I would rather be than a friend of Jesus, and to do that I must keep what He has commanded me to tell others about the gospel.

What a great opportunity we all have to start this journey with our friends on our “Friends Day” just three weeks from today. I can’t think of anything better to do for our friends than to tell them what they need to know to go to heaven, and to invite them to be with us on this day. Who will you be a friend to? Who will you bring?
