What is Faith?

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6)

I have always been interested in strange TV shows. I can watch infomercials for hours at a time, I have never gotten tired of them.  I saw a show that was on TV this past Monday and the title of it was “Our America” it was a show about different things happening in our country and the show spent time in the concept of “Faith in America”. One thing was evident very quickly. The concept of faith, at least on the program I was watching, seems very misunderstood.

Faith is not “touchy feely” and it not something that we “think”. The Hebrew writer shows that “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Heb 11:1). Faith is both a substance and evidence of something better. But the Hebrew write goes on to show that not only is faith “substance” and “evidence” but “by faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the WORD of God” (Heb 11:2). We need to look no further than the book of Genesis to see that this is absolutely true, The words “Then God Said” occur eight times in the account of the creation of the world in Genesis chapter one. The world was created by the WORD of God, and we know this is true because of our faith.

But our bottom line definition for faith is that faith involves our belief that God is. Our belief that God is as it is written of Him throughout His word, and our belief that God is as He says He is, and that our God is a “rewarder” of those who “diligently” seek Him. The idea of diligently seeking God comes from being something more than a casual observance or looking for. Diligently seeking God involves seeking God through study of His word, which draws our conclusion. Faith is manifested in our study of our Bible. “faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:10).

What is the bottom line? Faith is substance, and evidence, and faith is not touchy feely, faith is concrete and solid. Faith is a knowing our God is who He said He is, and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him, and seeking God, and building our faith can only be done through study of the word of God.
