What does a Christian look like (part 3)

Matt 22:37-40

Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’  This is the first and great commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’   On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

It didn’t take long to realize what was going on. The bright orange jumpsuits gave away the road crew working ahead. The uniforms were bright, and EVERYONE knew who they were. Over the last two weeks we have looked at examples of “What does a Christian look like”, today will be our final bulletin article concerning this topic. We have studied that a Christian will remember their example, a Christian will be separate from the world, a Christian will seek first the things of God, and a Christian will show their love for other Christians. What other things are out there to help identify a Christian?

A Christian will love God:  How simple does this sound? Pretty simple, but extremely important. A Christian will love God. The word love is used in three forms in God’s word, one form Phileo is a “brotherly” type love, The word Eros is a word used where we derive the word “erotic”, and the final and type of love mentioned in the bible is the word “Agape”. Agape is a “sacrificial” type of love, and the love we relate to best as the love Jesus has for us. “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. “ (John 15:13).

Jesus confronted Peter in John 21 concerning this type of love asking Peter two times the question “Do you love me? [more than these vs. 15]” (John 21:15-16). Jesus was essentially asking Peter, “Do you Love me, in a sacrificial way?” What a great question for each of us? Do we love God in a way that we are willing to sacrifice for Him? What are we willing to sacrifice for God, time? Money? Self? Liberty? The question Jesus asked Peter is the same for each of us today!

Our Love for God will be evident, our love for God will help us to sacrifice time, money, self so we can do all in our power to serve in a way pleasing to Him. It is important to remember that “we love God because He first loved us”(1 John 4:19), and that love was demonstrated for us on the cross at Calvary. A Christian will be an example in their love for our God.

How great it is to worship with so many here so genuinely love God and serve Him with their whole heart.
