Wednesday’s Word

My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments (Proverbs 3:1).

Is there a benefit for knowing the law of God? The answer is, Yes. In this chapter, Solomon, presents blessings and knowing and keeping the commandments of God. But, he also presents the facts that it is not enough to know the commandments of God, but they must be obeyed from the heart.

In diligent obedience, the child of God, replaces his will with the will of the heavenly Father; in faithful service, the follower of Christ submits to the way of the Lord.

The peace that passeth all understanding, is one of the benefits of faithful obedience to the word of God. This peace keeps our hearts and minds in time of trials and in storms of life. This peace brings comfort, even and especially, when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death.

A proper understanding of God is another benefit from obeying from the heart the word of the Lord. Through this understanding our faith is strengthened and the pathway of righteousness is brighter. The way to an abundant life is not in man; the way of eternal life is not in man, but trusting in God leads to both of these.

The blessings promised by God to the faithful, also present implications to those who fail to follow the word of the Lord. All spiritual blessings are in Christ, therefore those outside of Christ cannot enjoy the spiritual blessings.

Yes, God sends rain upon the just and the unjust, but He does not give true joy and peace to those who refuse to obey His word. The Hebrews writer states the Jesus is the “author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him” (Hebrews 5:9).

Let us heed the words written so long ago and let us strive to keep the word of God with all our heart.
