Wednesday’s Word

They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the Lord was my stay (Psalm 18:18).
The Psalmist declared his love for God and he also listed a number of reasons as to why he loves God. In contrast, he describes the trials brought into his life by his enemies. The word translated “prevented” could also be translated “confronted.” The enemy confronts us with struggles in life. Satan is not all-knowing, but he seems to know our weaknesses; Satan is not ever-present, but he seems to be at the wrong place at the right time. We must understand that Satan will be in this world as long as the world stands. Thus, Satan will place stumbling blocks in our paths as long as time continues. We must also understand that we cannot defeat Satan by ourselves, but with God we can have the victory.┬áThe word translated “stay” could be translated: support; protector or sustenance. God is our protector; God is our support which makes it possible for us to defend ourselves against Satan and to defeat Satan.
The world will make many suggestions as how to overcome temptation – but, God is the one, true answer (there is no other). Paul said that the gospel is the power of God unto salvation, to everyone that believeth. Without proper faith in God, the power of God cannot save; without proper faith in God, the power of God cannot deliver; without proper faith in God, the power of God cannot defend; and without proper faith in God, the power of God will not defeat Satan in our lives. God cannot and will not save us against our will; God cannot and will not deliver us against our will; and God cannot and will not defeat Satan in our lives against our will.
Let us say we love God; let us show we love God and God will be our stay.
