Tuesday’s Time

A false witness that speaketh lies and he that soweth discord among brethren (Proverbs 6:19).

Solomon wrote of six things hated by God and seven which were abominations to God. The word translated “hate” presents the idea of an enemy; the word translated “abomination” is described as the smell of a rotting corpse (something disgusting). In listing these transgressions, God spoke of things which stand in opposition to God and which are harmful to the cause of God and His people.Three of the seven listed, specifically address the misuse of the tongue: lying tongue; false witness and those who spread discord among brethren.

In speaking of the tongue, James wrote that no man can tame it (James 3:8). Man by himself will never properly control the tongue, but with God all things are possible (Luke 18:27). One of the big difficulties with the misuse of the tongue, is the ease with which it can be used. A word hastily spoken can have produce damage for life times. We would do well to remember, that a word spoken can never be retrieved. Growing up as a child of the pre-PC era, it amazed me how quickly information could travel by word of mouth. Now, in the internet world, with one click on the computer, destructive words are sent instantly around the globe.

God commands His children to use their tongues in teaching the gospel and by showing Christ in our lives. Yet, it is the same tongue that Satan desires to use to hinder the cause of Christ. The lost will not be justified because a Christian sinned with his tongue and God will not be glorified when the child of God gives his tongue over to Satan.

For the most part, all Christians use their tongues in communication every day. As children of God, we have committed ourselves in service to God and that includes our tongues. Each day we choose to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and that includes the use of our tongues. The proper use of the tongue comes easier to some than others, but all are held to the same standard and all serve the same God who makes the impossible, possible.

Do little things matter? The tongue, the little member, will either be used to bring glory to God or condemnation to our souls. Which will you choose?
