THANKSGIVING

“Thanksgiving” is a holiday which is celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. Last year I celebrated Thanksgiving in Hefei, China. The hotel roasted a turkey for dinner but the side dishes I did not recognize.

Even though we as Americans like to think that we invented “thanksgiving”, it is not true. God spoke of “thanksgiving” in the Law of Moses as well as in the New Testament.

Notice the words of the psalmist:

Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High   (Psalm 50:14).

I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving (Psalm 69:30).

I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD (Psalm 116:17).

This year I have noticed many taking the opportunity to give “30 days of thanksgiving”. This is great, but it falls short some 335 days of our responsibility. There is no day in which we are not blessed by God. If you do not already do so, let me suggest that we begin every day with a prayer of thanksgiving. We have so much for which to be thankful that we cannot exhaust our lists even in 365 days.

What would the world be without God? First of all, without God the world would not exist. God is the one who created the world and all things in it. Perhaps mankind should remember this fact when attempting to push God out of the world. Without God in the world, there would be no sense of “ought”: that which is fair; that which is just.

What would your family be without God? First of all, without God the family would not exist. God created the family and makes it possible of the family to continue. Without God mankind would have no sense of family: what it is to make a family; what it is to sustain a family. Without God, there would be no understanding of each member’s responsibility to the family. Without God, there would be no understanding of the love of the family; the security of the family; the strength of the family.

What would you be without God? First of all, without God you would not exist. God is the one who created mankind. God is the one who gave mankind dominion over the things of this world. God is the one who taught us love. God is the one who taught us care and compassion. God is the one who taught us hope.

Without God there is no hope, there is no love, there is no life. Therefore, we have reason to offer thanksgiving unto God every minute of every day.
