Of That Time We Do Not Know

“But of that day and hour knows no man”
(Matt 24:36)

December 2012 has become a hot topic. As a matter of fact, this month marks three years ago to the day; 12/21/2012 is etched in the mind of many. As many would say, the seas will roll with huge waves, the sun will shoot fire which will race towards earth, earthquakes will be common, and life as we know it will end. Sounds like a great theme to a movie, and it is a movie, appropriately called 2012. The movie is based on the Mayan calendar, which many claim to be historically correct in foretelling events that will happen and the time they will happen. According to this train of thought, the Mayan calendar will run out on December 21, 2012, and many also think existence will cease.

Look at other times the end has been predicted by men. January 1st, 2000 many believed the end of time would come. Hal Lindsey stated that in 1948, 1967, 1988 and finally in 2007 the end would come. Charles King said the world would cease to exist on August 18, 1999. The world is still here.

The events we should be concerned about concerning the end of time on earth are clearly spoken of in God’s word. What are some things we know concerning the end of the Christian age?

  1. We know that there will be many who will not see Heaven because of their life choices, but there will be those who will be in Heaven for eternity because of their choices in this life. (Matt 7:13-14)
  2. We know that those who serve God faithfully in this life will spend eternity in Heaven. (Matt 25:31ff)
  3. We know only those who DO the will of the Father will enter Heaven. (Matt 7:21-23)
  4. We know that those who die in Christ will be judged along with those who are faithful at the time Christ returns.  (1 Thess 4:13ff)
  5. We know at that time that Jesus Christ will deliver the kingdom (the church) to God the Father for eternity. (1 Cor 15:24)

Despite all we know, look at one of the things God has never told us. God not only has not told us, but God has told no one, when the date of the end of time will be. Jesus made it clear that “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Mark 13:32). God promises that “Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.” (Luke 12:43). Although it makes a great scene for the big screen, the date of the end of time is something we do not know.  But we do know we should be busy serving our Lord.
