Monday’s Moment

His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins (Proverbs 5:22).

In this chapter, much is said in warning against the sin of adultery. The reminder is given that sexual satisfaction is to be found only in marriage and that the desire is to be only of ones spouse. The temptations outside the marriage bond are many and varied, therefore much effort and diligence must be given to a faithful marriage relationship. The “slippery slope” that leads to the destruction of a marriage must be guarded against at all times.

James stated: “that every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed (James 1:14).Solomon wrote of ones “own iniquities”  and of “his sins.” God holds us responsible for our actions; God holds us accountable for our sins. Solomon warned of the actions presented by the “strange” woman (and she will not be found guiltless), but that does not relieve us of our responsibilities. This is true in dealing with sexual sins and all unrighteousness.

One of God’s great warnings is the contrast between what sin offers and what sin truly provides. Yes, it is true that some sin presents pleasure (Hebrews 11:25), but all sins leads to eternal death and destruction. God makes available the strength to overcome sin, but we must make the choice to accept the help offered from God.

Indeed, we are “holden with the cords” of our own sins and we are the ones who must make the choice to cast off these cords. God makes it possible for us to overcome sin, but we are the ones who must put it into practice.

This day, let us choose to turn to God and to turn away from Satan.
