It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!!

“You asked, ‘Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?’ Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.” (Job 42:3)

The weeks following Thanksgiving, which lead to the traditional Christmas season, are always a special time of year. What makes this time of year wonderful for you? It may be that you are able to be with your family and friends whom you don’t see very often. It may be the incredible meals that you only experience this time of year. You may be a shopper, and the thoughts of shopping may make this a wonderful time of year.  Generally, this time of year brings out the opposite extremes in people. Many are extraordinarily happy, but too often it only takes a trip to the local Wal-Mart to notice there are some “Bah Humbugs” around from time to time as well. Anyone who has ever worked in retail will understand this sentiment. The reasons for the extremes in attitude vary. For some this is a time of great stress and anxiety, for others it is a time of great joy and anticipation.

Much of the world seems especially tuned into the “Christian” religion at this time of the year. The truth is, God expects and commands Christians to be examples to others. Paul reminds the young man Timothy to be an “example to the believers” (1 Tim 4:12). We are to “Let our light shine before men so that they see our good works and glorify our Father who is in heaven” (Matt 5:16). Our conduct is to be “honorable” among those around us so that, as Peter says, they may “by our good works, which they observe glorify God in the day of visitation” (1 Peter 2:12). The commands of God have not changed. We are to be lights, and we are to be good examples, regardless of the time of year, or season which we are in.

Take time over this holiday season to enjoy time with your family and friends. Take time to enjoy wonderful meals, and to maybe even spend some time shopping. Take time off from work and relax. But in all we do, let’s not forget to let our light shine in front of others. What a wonderful privilege it is to work with a congregation where compliments are heard of your light shining all over this town. Thank you for the work you do, and thank you for the example you are to others.
