A Roaring Lion

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour (I Peter 5:8).

The television news showed a zebra running loose in Atlanta.  Do you think that caught anyone’s attention?  A zebra that had escaped from the circus may amuse us, but a lion loose in the streets should frighten us.  Peter describe Satan as a “lion seeking whom he may devour”.

We would easily recognize a lion walking about our neighborhoods or meandering through our houses, but Satan is more cleaver than that.  Satan does not manifest himself as an actual lion, nor is he dressed up in a red suit, pointed tail with a pitchfork.  Satan uses every means to defeat us and God: he will tempt us through people, places, things, ideas and the list goes on.

Peter is warning us to be on the watch for Satan however he may approach us.  We must recognize Satan for what he is, not necessarily as he appears for he is as a roaring lion walking about seeking whom he may devour.
