Count Your Blessings

This is the first of five Sundays in November. Each week throughout the month we are going to take the opportunity to study a lesson of thanksgiving. In America we live lives which much of the world can only imagine. As children of God we live lives which the world cannot imagine.

If you are a child of God you are blessed to have had the opportunity to hear the word of God proclaimed. If you are a child of God you are blessed to have had the opportunity to understand the word of God. If you are a child of God you are blessed to have had the opportunity to obey the word of God. These things were possible because God is a loving God who knew the need of man and met the need of man.

When we count our blessings we must also realize our responsibilities. We have responsibilities to serve and worship God faithfully. Our service to God also includes our service to our fellow man especially those of the household of faith (Galatians 6:7-10).

Our responsibilities must be numbered with the blessings.  We are blessed to serve the omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent God. We are blessed to serve the one, true God and to know Him as our Father (Romans 8:15). We are blessed to serve the one who has made eternal life possible for His children (Titus 1:2). We are blessed to serve the one who makes it possible for the world to know love (I John 4:7).

We have the responsibility (and the blessing) to live faithfully unto God. Included in our faithful lives is the responsibility to mature as Christians thus promoting growth in our congregation. I speak of spiritual growth of individuals which will in turn lead to numerical growth of the congregation (II Peter 3:18).

We are blessed to live in a country wherein as children we are taught to read. This is not so in all other countries; many will never be blessed to be able to read the beautiful and precious words of God.

Being blessed to be able to read we are also blessed to have copies of the Bible readily available. This is not so in all other countries; while many have the ability to read they will never have the opportunity to read about the love of God and the hope of Heaven.

Having the blessing of reading and studying the word of God we are blessed with the freedom to obey and serve God. This is not so in all other countries; many may read or hear the word of God but will be denied the choice to freely serve God.

Let us show God our gratitude for our blessings, including the blessing of responsibilities.
